Occlusal splints (night guards) are mostly used by people who suffer from bruxism (unconscious teeth grinding, mostly at night) or bruxomania (conscious teeth grinding while awake) . They are used to reduce the abrasia and protect dental tissue, reduce the load of tooth supporting structures and decreasing jaw pain. Also, athletes use it to reduce the risk of tooth damage. Occlusal splints are made individually, based on jaw prints. Athletes usually use it only for the upper jaw.
Most occlusal splint are made from 2 mm thick hard rubber that covers all teeth.
