It is a surgical procedure which increases the height of the upper jaw bone. Sometimes this procedure is needed to allow implant placement. Maxillary sinuses are located the cheek in a bone and go from the area below the eye to above back teeth.
The roots of upper side teeth often enter into the sinus. After these teeth are extracted it is a frequent case that only a small distance of a bone remains between the sinus and mouth. That is a problem for the dentist because he cannot place and stabilize the implant . During the sinus lift the oral surgeon accesses the sinus from the point of extracted teeth in the upper jaw, carefully rises the sinus membrane and places the artificial bone to the sinus bottom. If the height of the natural bone is sufficient for the primary implant stability and the implant top is in the sinus cavity the implants are placed rightaway and the artificial bone is placed to fill the space around the implant. If by any case the natural bone is narrow then the artificial bone is placed into the sinus after which there is a waiting period of minimum 6 months and later on the actual implant placement can happen.
